Position Summary

Summary:  Performs laboratory procedures using established and approved protocols that require a high level of independent judgment and responsibility. The Clinical Technical Specialist performs at an advanced level requiring extensive knowledge in trouble shooting quality control, instrument and equipment failures, specimen collection problems, etc. Able to work independently. May be specialized in areas as blood banking, chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, histology, or cytology, appropriate to the services provided and to the ages of the patients served. 

Responsibilities

  1. Uses an appropriate problem-solving approach to plan performance of service.
  2. Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis.
  3. Performs required quality control, and maintenance to insure accurate results. Troubleshoots problems as needed.
  4. Performs assigned analytical test and task that require moderate to broad independent judgment.
  5. Performs proficiency testing. Reviews and performs calibrations and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation; monitors preparation of reagents, standards and controls according to protocols.  Maintains and documents laboratory records in keeping with department procedures; quality control, corrective actions, maintenance, temperature records, etc.
  6. Participates in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures. Assists with equipment validation, method comparisons, and establishment of reference intervals as required.
  7. Works closely with department Assistant Director in preparing quality control reports, IAQP data, proficiency test review and documentation. Reviews reports and initiates corrective actions as needed. 
  8. Maintains department quality data and serves on the Laboratory Quality committee.
  9. Works on intradepartmental teams as needed to improve and achieve departmental goals and objectives.

  1. Provides services with consideration of the physical, psycho-social, cultural/spiritual,

     and age specific needs of those served.

  1. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, conferences, and professional affiliations. Must maintain clinical and professional competency levels appropriate to the services provided and to the ages of the patients served.
  2. Attends meetings as required. Participates on committees as required/requested.  Performs all other duties consistent with the nature of the job as may be required by the director.
  3. Participate in special projects or assignments. Contributes to help meet departmental goals
  4. Coordinates training schedules and orientation of new employees within the specific department. Assists the department AD with staff competency; initial and annual.
  5. Assists department AD in maintaining and insure compliance with JCAHO and CLIA standards.

  1. Use equipment/supplies correctly.
  2. Helps to effect cost control measures in utilization of supplies, materials and equipment
  3. Maintains departmental supplies and inventory. Employs effective cost control measures.  Works with departmental AD to maintain cost control.
  4. Maintains equipment appropriately; follows established P.M. schedules. Performs advanced troubleshooting as necessary.  Serves as key operator for instruments within the department.
  5. Coordinates implementation and validation of new equipment with departmental assistant director.
  6. Participates in the evaluation and selection process for new equipment.

  1. Uses appropriate safety and infection control measures.
  2. Adheres to hospital and department policies, procedures, and objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control and compliance with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
  3. Works within established service priorities, work routines, workflow patterns and monitors to assure prompt, efficient, and safe delivery of services. Take steps to correct work habits not in compliance with good laboratory practices.
  4. May investigate incidents, takes appropriate action and prepares reports.
  5. Cooperates with Safety and Infection Control departments and personnel to carry out

             Environmental monitoring programs.

  1. Assists with insuring compliance and safety within the department.

  1. Teaches/directs/advises/informs others in an appropriate manner.
  2. Performs quality control to validate accurate instrument function, reagents and procedures. Recognizes instrument malfunction and out of control results and takes corrective action.
  3. Incorporates principles of educational methodology in the instruction of new employees and in the laboratories in-service/continuing education program.
  4. May be assigned to orient/train, direct personnel within a given area or shift of the laboratory. Providing guidance, and instruction as needed.
  5. Assists in development and implementation of new and established policies and procedures.

  1. Reports/records information correctly.
  2. Maintains required documentation of records, reports, logs and files.
  3. Validates and reports results of tests performed.
  4. Evaluates departmental practices and initiates; may recommend effective measures to improve services and quality of current methodologies.
  5. Assists department AD in collection and review of departmental management reports. Turn around, specimen rejection, cancelled test, etc. evaluate data and make recommendations for improvement.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor of Science in medical technology, biology, chemistry, or related science with a year of clinical training in an accredited school of medical/histology/cyto technology and 2 years laboratory experience.  Certification in medical technology or medical laboratory technology by a nationally recognized certification agency with active registration.
